The Diary of Montaigne's Journey to Italy - in 1580 and 1581

E.J. Trechmann's "The Diary of Montaigne's Journey to Italy in 1580 and 1581" brings to life Michel de Montaigne's travel diary as an intimate record of curiosity in motion. Across Italy, Montaigne moves through cities, landscapes, and encounters with people and ideas, turning each observation into a meditation on how experience shapes judgment. The narrative highlights his restless appetite for learning—his willingness to question appearances, compare customs, and test his own mind against unfamiliar realities. Rather than presenting travel as a simple itinerary, the diary becomes a living workshop of thought: reflections on art and history, on political life and everyday manners, and on the shifting boundaries between the self and the world. The Diary of Montaigne's Journey to Italy - in 1580 and 1581 is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1929.
