Merchant and Craft Guilds - A History of the Aberdeen Incorporated Trades

"Merchant and Craft Guilds" by Ebenezer Bain offers a vivid historical account of the Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen, tracing how merchants and craftsmen shaped the city's economic life, social order, and civic identity. Through the lens of guild organization, the book reveals how standards were set, skills were protected, trade was regulated, and members advanced from apprenticeships to full participation. Bain connects these local institutions to wider developments in commerce and urban society, showing that guilds were far more than professional associations—they were engines of community, influence, and continuity. Merchant and Craft Guilds - A History of the Aberdeen Incorporated Trades is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1887.
