Memoirs of Barras - Member of the Directorate

George Duruy's "Memoirs of Barras: Member of the Directorate" offers a vivid, insider account of the turbulent years of the French Revolution and the Directory period through the perspective of Paul François Barras. Rather than presenting events as distant history, Duruy conveys the political maneuvering, shifting alliances, and constant pressure behind the scenes—where survival depended on strategy as much as ideology. The book captures how power was built, challenged, and defended amid scandals, coups, and public unrest, showing the Directorate as a fragile system kept afloat by calculated compromises. Through Barras's recollections, readers gain an engaging sense of how leaders navigated both the brilliance and the brutality of revolutionary politics, illuminating the human motives. Memoirs of Barras - Member of the Directorate is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1895.
