"Stine" revisits this theme, but with even greater social harshness. Stine Rehbein, a simple, quiet woman from Berlin's working-class milieu, becomes the lover of the widowed Count Waldemar von Haldern. While she enters into the relationship with reserve and honesty, she consciously remains on the margins of his world. The attempt to unite these worlds ends in catastrophe. Unlike Lene in "Trials and Tribulations," Stine becomes a victim of her circumstances—an irreconcilable image of social barriers.
