An Outline of the History of the Novela Picaresca in Spain

Fonger De Haan traces the development of the Spanish picaresque novel from its early roots to its later transformations, showing how a distinctive blend of realism, satire, and social critique emerged across changing historical and cultural conditions. By outlining key works, recurring themes, and characteristic narrative strategies—especially the figure of the roguish outsider—he reveals why these stories resonated so strongly with contemporary audiences. More than a simple literary survey, the book explains how the picaresque mode reflects shifting attitudes toward class, morality, and authority, and how it continues to influence Spanish storytelling beyond its original period. An Outline of the History of the Novela Picaresca in Spain is an unchanged, high-quality reprint of the original edition of 1895.
